Executive Job Searching is Self-Marketing—Make No Mistake!

What has cemented the doom of many job seekers, especially executive-level leaders is their inability (or self-destructive refusal) to wrap their minds around the idea of marketing themselves as if they were a product. As a “product,” you must clearly articulate your executive brand, unique value proposition, and market an ROI.

Yet, instead, most executives mount a precarious campaign with the intention of simply providing their qualifications and hoping their corporate job titles plus Fortune 100 and 500 employers’ reputation would suffice to net that competitive job interview.

Know this: at the executive level it is a given that you must be qualified for the coveted six-figure jobs you are pursuing. Don’t you think?

But, why are you the best choice out of all the executives vying for the same career opportunity? What makes you so irresistible that employers should be vying to lasso you into their office for a face to face?

You must seduce your new employer through strategic brand positioning, rigorous (but tactful) self-marketing, ABOVE that of your toughest c-suite competitor.

How to Mine and Discover Your Executive Distinction

Reach for your picks and shovels and mine for your global leadership distinction along with me by performing the following exercise.

a. In alignment with what is needed by the companies I am targeting, I need to promote the following three personal profile qualities _______, _______, and ______ in my marketing message.

b. To perfectly match what is needed from the ideal candidate, I need to convey my unique talent in being able to achieve _______________________________________ consistently throughout my career. This is evidenced by the following examples from my career: (choose at least 3).

c. This skill (“b” above) is unique of someone with my qualifications and experiences (and at my senior leadership level) in that I, unlike most executives, will go about it this way ________________________________________________.

d. To convince employers my distinction positions me to solve their problem(s) and deliver benefits for XYZ Company, I must promise them the following ______________________ as an end result.

Now Package Your C-Level Message

You will, I am sure, continue to sharpen and deepen your executive self-marketing message. For now, this is a great starting point. Good luck!

Don’t Do This With Your Executive Resume

Don’t put your resume on a billboard.

Or a sandwich board.

Don’t put your resume on a T-shirt.

Don’t take out ads featuring your resume.

Don’t place your resume on Google maps.

While all of the above have been employed by other job seekers, it is unlikely to help you at your executive level.

According to a CareerBuilder survey, nearly one-quarter of hiring managers (22 percent) reported more job seekers trying unusual tactics to capture by 2010. This was up 18% from 2009 and 12% in 2008.

Jason Ferrara, senior career adviser at CareerBuilder noted, “More candidates are turning to unconventional tactics to attract the attention of hiring managers. While these tactics may work occasionally, they still need to be done with professionalism. That way, candidates are remembered for what they can offer an organization and not just for an unusual antic.” More often, you run the risk of turning off the employer; only 9 percent of hiring managers say they have hired someone who used an unconventional approach to get their attention.

Inventing imaginative ways to get your executive resume noticed is not necessarily a bad thing, especially if the idea is original and you are in PR or marketing. Just do your research before executing the plan, and make certain you are the first job seeker to try it. If not, stick with the tried and true methods of circulating your resume, especially distributing it through your executive network. It won’t make headlines, but the odds are good it can get you a job.

Great C-suite Resumes

If you are an IT executive targeting the C-suite, your resume needs to reflect leadership accomplishments that drove the business value and delivered an attractive ROI. Whether you are a CIO envisioning corporate strategies, or a CTO steering operational excellence and tactical initiatives, your resume must promote your brand as a technology leader that partners with the corporate team in moving the organization forward in a competitive global marketplace.

Most CIO / CTO resumes are densely packed with technical jargon, skills, and tools that go back to their first job out of college. By the time you head for the corporate office, technology skills are your value-add, not your unique selling proposition (USP). In addition to making your resume too long, (two to three pages should suffice), it can serve to date you when it is preferable to appear modern, pioneering, and relevant.

Follow these guidelines to produce compelling CIO / CTO resumes:

Promote achievements, not skills. Make sure you understand how to quantify your value through measurable results. Dollars saved, efficiencies improved, profits gained, EBITDA, and ROI should be established.

Exhibit stakeholder collaboration. Technology executives at the leadership level need to understand and communicate with diverse departments heads, and document how their technological initiatives generated value across business segments.

Provide examples of talent development. Your resource management applies to technology and human assets. Describe how you have recruited, mentored, and promoted future company leaders.

Demonstrate innovation. How has your technological vision usurped the competition, revolutionized the business model, piloted Centers of Excellence, and instituted best practices that boosted profits for your company?

Illustrate professional engagement. While listing every technical skill isn’t desirable, acquiring respected certifications and embracing cutting-edge tools is a benefit. Display how you executed thought leadership through industry organizations, board memberships, or media channels.

Employ the above strategies to prove to a prospective employer how your technology leadership will be integral to their viability, profitability, and security with an achievement rich resume that distinguishes you from the competition.
